Building a practice baseball field Building a practice baseball field

Building a practice baseball field

by Jeff
(Manvel Texas)

I live in Manvel, Tx, and have two sons playing ball. I am thinking of building a practice field on my property. It is hard to get a good practice field for Little League and select teams in the area. If you have any advice on how to go about this without spending a crazy amount of money it would help. Type of dirt to use and the best size. I have a 6 year old in his last year of tee-ball, and an eight (about to be nine) year old playing 8U select ball. Most of the sites I've been to have been giving instruction on professional to game fields. Thanks for the help.

Jeff,

Thanks for the question. I'm not sure if you've visited this site yet, but at first glance on a Google search I found this site:

http://www.infosports.com/baseball/5.htm

It's about "Maintaining and Building Baseball Fields." It looked like it had some pretty solid info there.

As far as the field dimensions go, for AAU here is a link to the AAU rule book, and they have the "Age Specific Provisions" listed on page 21, with field dimensions listed in that section.

If you can't find what you need there, I'd recommend joining Baseball Fever and asking this question there. I bet you'd get a pretty nice flood or good responses there. Thanks Jeff, and let me know if this helped by posting a comment with the link below.
