If you are building a new ball field, or taking care of an existing one, baseball field equipment is absolutely essential. There are a variety of things you’re going to need to have to maintain a functional baseball field.
Note: This page will discuss all baseball field equipment except batting cages used for pitching machines. See my separate page for information specific to that.
The first and most obvious pieces of field
equipment that you’re going to need are bases and a pitching rubber.
There are a few different manufacturers of bases that you may select
from. Pictured is a good basic set from Champro that is
priced at
$120.
The next thing you’ll definitely need are foul
poles. For the average amateur field, these can range from 10 ft in
height for youth fields, up to 30 ft for high school and college
fields.
Fencing is also a must for a functional field. Fencing provides a backstop as well as protection for the fans from foul balls. An outfield wall fence must also be used to mark the boundaries of the field. Fencing all around the field makes for a more well-defined and distinct playing field.
A portable batting cage or backstop is great for batting practice. This allows teams to take batting practice and walk around the home plate area without having to worry about getting hit from a foul ball.

Protective screens are also important for practice. "L screens" for pitchers and square screens for fielders are very nice. They serve as protection from hard hit balls. With an L screen, pitchers can throw batting practice from shorter distances without worrying about taking a ball off the forehead.
Many other pieces of maintenance
equipment are also needed to keep the field kept up to
optimal playing condition. First you’re going to need a few high
quality rakes, a dirt tamp, and a mat to drag the infield. Regular
field maintenance is very important if you wish to keep the ball field
in great playing shape. It doesn’t take much neglect for a field to go
downhill in appearance. You’ll also want a device to chalk the batters
box and foul lines to get the field ready for game time.
If you are interested in shopping for
baseball field equipment I recommend browsing the selection at
Baseball Express.
Adequate baseball field equipment is absolutely required to keep those ball fields looking good. There’s nothing I hate worst than playing on a neglected and poor quality field. Ask any player and they’ll tell you the better the field looks, the more enjoyable it is to play on.
