All about baseball cleats,
and how to choose them

Baseball cleats, or "spikes," are used by ballplayers to improve traction and prevent slippage when running. Until a player reaches the teen years, metal cleats are not allowed. Rubber cleats are used instead to prevent youngsters from getting hurt.

Metal cleats however, are used by all older age groups on up to the pros. They are better for gripping the surface than rubber cleats, since they are sharper and more durable.

There are no real hard and fast rules for choosing a pair of cleats. Some players like high tops, while most others wear low-tops. Although I've worn both, I've personally always felt more comfortable with low-tops, because they are a little less bulky, and usually feel lighter on my feet. Choose something that is comfortable and will not slow you down any. Unlike gloves, there are not different styles of cleats for each position
