Some of the maple models of Akadema wood bats feature what they call their Tacktion Grip that is designed to give the batter a substitute for pine tar or tape. The interesting thing about this grip is that it is made of a combination of sunflower seed shells, walnut shells, sand, and maple wood all ground up together. Not quite your average composition for your bat grip.
Having used one of these bats, I can tell you that it does provide a decent grip when it is held, especially with batting gloves on. The material is somewhat rigid and definitely provides a better girp than the smooth finished wood on most bats. As far as using it as a substitute for pine tar, that would probably have to be left up to you and what your individual preferences are for what feels best in your hands.
The maple models of bats will run you anywhere from $65-85, depending on where you purchase them from. I'd recommend getting them from the Akadema website.
If you're looking for a traditional white ash bat, than you'll be able to get by spending a little less than you would for maple. These are available in several different models and barrel sizes ranging in price from $30-42 from their website.
This bat is an interesting design. It is an ash wood bat, but it is reinforced with a light weight carbon and glass fiber on the outside. This helps to evenly distribute the load on impact with the ball, and will make the bat last much longer than traditional wood bats. Basically, it seems that the Super Bat will give you a wood bat, but much stronger than the typical wood bat, and will most likely last much longer as well.
